An amazing performance yesterday in Glen Park by local singer/songwriter Lori B reminded me of something that I’ve often thought about — the transformative power of art, especially in an endangered world. During the Second World War, when Winston Churchill was asked to cut arts funding, he answered — “Then what are we fighting for?” Art heals. Art nourishes. Art sustains. And making art, and sharing art, can change the world.

In this spirit I want to propose a salon renaissance. Invented in Italy in the 16th century, salons reached their peak in France during the 17th and 18th centuries. They brought together artists, writers, musicans, and art lovers, for conversation and cultural enrichment.

At a time when art funding is disappearing, why not create a salon in your home, to share you work and the work of others with an interested community of like-hearted people who are committed to making the world a better place? Three or four artists, a big living room, and perhaps some potluck dishes, for an hour or three, can provide a forum for art to flourish at a grassroots level, without funding and without plugging into the consumer fame machine.

Make art and share art. Together we can change the world, a drawing, story, a song at a time.

In the month of Elul, a time of introspection that leads up to the Jewish New Year, having just begun Volume 130 of the journal I’ve been keeping since college — I have a clarity about my life as a writer that I did not have before. On my website, created and maintained by that wizard of techtonics, Noam Szoke, I said that I think in quotations. About to turn sixty and a half on the 24th, I find myself living in the space between these two:

When a new child is born in the family, the ancestors gather above it
and whisper among themselves: “Maybe this will be the one who
will tell our stories and heal our lineage.” Angeles Arrien

Es verdad que reparten cartas
transparentes, por todo el cielo?

Is it true they scatter
transparent letters across the sky? Pablo Neruda
